If that distributor hasn’t moved since dyno, it’s not 180 out. Wouldn’t run, even poorly at 180 out. Probly cracked a plug installing the engine, landed a wire wrong, or inadvertently rotated the distributor.
When the distributor is installed 180 deg off, you get a condition known as “Carnoworkee” Well when I did it there was fuel spitting out of the carb when I tried to start it. Sometimes the fuel was ignited, sometimes not. Once I got it set correctly the motor ran fine. No long term damage that I know off.
Theoreticly a distributer does not know or care if it is 180 degrees out, or for that matter 90 or 270 degrees out. What it does care about is if the rotor is pointing to number one spark plug lead terminal on the distributer cap. Gotta love it when a 16 year old thread comes back to life.

Would an engine run if the distributor was off by 180*?
If that distributor hasn’t moved since dyno, it’s not 180 out. Wouldn’t run, even poorly at 180 out. Probly cracked a plug installing the engine, landed a wire wrong, or inadvertently rotated the distributor. Time it, and then put your light on all the wires to see if all fire. What happens if your distrib. is 180degrees off? – Vintage Mustang Forums
Remove the distributor cap and check which plug wire is the closest. That should be #1. You can do this several times until you are sure. Besides being 180 out you could also have the firing order right BUT IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. Easiest way to determine rotation is watch what direction the rotor turns.

Apr 2, 2006. #6. You can run the distributor 180 degrees backwards, just put the plug wires on backwards and be sure to remember you done it, otherwise it’ll never run after a tuneup! lol. Anyway, I second the Harmonic Balancer, I’d bet it’s crapped on you and outside has slipped, causing your timing marks to be off.

yes try double checking the timing marks on your chain gears and then if all is well, check your plug wire installation on your dist cap if it only runs 180 degrees out, you may have had the cap wired wrong. you may have overlooked the rotation of your distributor. because you work on gm you may be thinking it is clockwise rotation. i am not 100% …
Distributor 180 degrees off? – Hot Rod Forum
Is it possible to run a SBC with the distributor 180 degrees off? The reason that I ask is that I may have set up the dist on my car with TDC for the #6 cylinder instead of #1. It has been running this way for a while and not very well, but acceptably. It has been running very rich and sputtering slightly and running pretty rough at idle.

My distributor is 180 degrees out, but runs great! – Engine Tech …
It’s not 180 out. You must keep in mind that each piston reaches TDC twice in a 4 cycle [4 stroke] motor. Once at the end of the compression stroke and again at the end of the exhaust stroke. 1 and 6 are both always at TDC at the same time, but they’re at the end of different cycles. 8 and 5 are always at TDC at the same time, but they’re at the end of different cycles.
Distributor 180 out | Ford Mustang Forums
If your distributor is off 180 then your rotor will be pointed straight away from your #1 (which is normally at about the 11:30 position on my car, it varies with your dist. placement but is usually pointed at the intake) when you set your balancer to TDC. Most likely the car won’t even start if it’s 180 out.
180 out distributor? – Ford Mustang Forum
The 2.3L Ford will actually run with the distributor and even the camshaft 180 degrees out, it just won’t have any power, won’t run right, and the engine won’t live very long doing it. Distributor is out 180 degrees – Jeep Wrangler Forum
If its 180 out, pull the distributor and put it back in so the rotor points to the #1 wire location on the cap. It may go in just a little before that point and they will be alright. If it points to the #1 position after reaching TDC, then you have other issues to address. Good luck on your project. Gottagofast Registered Joined May 16, 2017

Maybe he has one of those optional firing order engines. And No the engine won’t run with the distributor 180* (1/2 turn) out. I hate to burst your bubble, but I know 1st hand that an engine WILL run at 180 out, we used to do it in high school to our hot rods, and with enough advance ran and sounded lopey, just not for very long.
Engine timing 180 degrees out and it runs – The Stovebolt Forums
Since all of those engines have timing marks on the front of the engine, the most obvious guess would be a slipped outer ring on the harmonic balancer. If the timing marks on a good-condition damper ring are 180 degrees away from the mark on the timing cover when the #1 cylinder fires, there’s no way the engine can run.

How Does a Person End Up With Their Timing “180 Out”?
the 180 degrees refers to the camshaft position relative to the crankshaft.the camshaft is turning at 1/2 the crank speed.think of it as tdc for the crank is always with the piston at the top of the cylinder but the camshaft can be 1/2 a rotation out of position (180degrees) by rotating the crank 1 full revolution you will rotate the cam 1/2 a …
Timing 180 degrees off but it still runs good? – Geo Metro Forum
Whichever way you align the cam with #1 at tdc then when you rotate the engine one full turn the cam will have rotated 1/2 a turn and the opposite alignment will be found. Also the notch on vaccum distributors is usually about the 2 o’clock position. Remember firing order is 1-4-3-2 clockwise so if #1 plug wire is at the notch and 4-3-2 follow, then the drive is in backwards. The other way to verify this is to set the motor to #1 TDC, pull the distributor and look down at the drive.
What are the symtoms of timing being 180 off?? – Ford Mustang Forums
If it sounds like it almost wants to run and you know you have fuel and spark, then I would guess that your distributor is 180 out. Set your balancer to 0 dgrees and then pull the cap. If it’s not pointing at the number 1 plug firing position on the cap, then pull your distrib and stab it again until it points directly at the 1 position.
possible for cam timing to be 180 out and run decent?
About the only thing you can mess up is the distributer installation; such that, you have #1 plug wire firing on the Over-lap rather then on the compression stroke; hence, the distributer is out 180 degrees. If you have the distributor installed 180 degrees out you will definitely hear the popping or notice flames shooting out of the carb – LOL

Running 180 degrees out of time? – LS1LT1 Forum
The 180° out of time thing is attributed to a conventional distributor when during install it was possible to get it 180° out of phase because of the oil pump drive. If it’s 180 out, it will pop and backfire when you try to start it. When a cold engine backfires through the carburetor, it’s most likely an indication that your air/fuel mixture is too lean, not excessive timing. So, in order to turn the Distributor 180 – what you have to do is (first, pull the Distributor out, then) pull the oil pump off and clock the oil pump 180. THEN you stick the Distributor back into the oil pump in the new position. And rearrange your plug wires, check timing, etc. Then you can oil the Distributor! Last edited: May 25, 2021.
