Will Cd Interest Rates Go Up In 2021

Online banks typically pay higher interest rates on CDs than national brick-and-mortar banks. Online CD rates went down in 2020, but they probably won’t decrease much more in 2021, because they need to pay higher rates to compete with large banks like Chase or Bank of America.

My hopes for CD rate increases in 2021 and 2022 have diminished. There may be an occasional CD special with a rate above 1%, but I would be surprised if we see any nationwide CDs with rates near or above 2%. CDs with terms of 2+ years are especially unattractive these days, especially when we see the possibility of persistently high inflation.

If you’re worried about being locked into a low-rate CD if rates start rising, choose long-term CDs with early withdrawal penalties of no more than six months of interest. The above graph shows the rate trends of the average CD rates. These average rates are based on all the rate data that we have collected over the years.

Fast forward to 2021 and most CDs don’t even yield 1 percent. When will CD rates go up again and which banks pay the highest rates currently? While CDs aren’t the highest-yielding savings option, they’re considered to be very safe. CDs issued by FDIC-insured banks are insured for up to $250,000 per depositor.
