Why Was Germany Unhappy With The Weimar Republic

Arguably the most significant reason why the Weimar Republic failed was the onset of the Great Depression. The economic collapse of 1929 had dire effects on Germany. By 1932, two-fifths of the German workforce or some six million people were without a job.

Germans did not want it. Weimar Republic was created only because Allies refused to negotiate with a royal regime in Germany and said that they will talk only with a democratic regime. Besides, people of Germany was not asked when Republic was formed. On top of all, most Germans saw Weimar Republic responsible for the German defeat in World War 1.

Perhaps the biggest threat to the Weimar Republic was the extreme debt placed on the country by the long war and subsequent reparations owed. Revenue created by German industries, such as coal and iron ore, were channeled to reparations. The government was losing its ability to pay its own debts. Hyperinflation followed.

The Depression acted as a catalyst in tearing through the political and economic fabric of Weimar Germany – the onset of the crisis demonstrated to the German electorate the government’s inability to effectively deal with economic instability.
