In 1864, it was flooded by torrential rains and declared vulnerable and obsolete. Subsequent uses of the fort included storing mines during the Spanish-American War, holding seamen, and as a pistol range. Most of the steel was salvaged for the war effort and the government abandoned the fort in 1920.

One of many abandoned places in Maryland, Fort Carroll can be found on the Patapsco River near Baltimore. This hexagonal, artificial island was built in 1847 as a defense spot to protect the city. It was placed with thirty cannon and was manned during the Spanish-American War and Civil War but never got much use.

More than 80 concrete guns were built in this manner.

It was originally a fort, built in 1847. Once the fort was no longer deemed necessary as a defense spot for Baltimore, it was left abandoned.
