Voltmeters are connected in parallel with whatever device’s voltage is to be measured. A parallel connection is used because objects in parallel experience the same potential difference.

All of us know that a voltmeter has high shunting resistance, hence it would be wise decision to connect it in parallel, since less current will flow through high resistance path and more current will flow to that desired circuit element. If we connect it in series, we will just end by getting the voltage difference of just different points.
