Why Is The Vatican The Center Of Christianity

Being the most sacred places in Christendom, the city of Vatican City is a testimony to the history of some two millennia. As the site of the tomb of Apostle Saint Peter, who was the first Pope, this is the main pilgrimage center directly linked to the history of Christianity.

Why did Vatican City end up in Rome, as opposed to another location, like Jerusalem? It is not Rome that “inherited” the primacy of St. Peter, it is St. Peter’s successor who inherits the primacy. St. Peter died in Rome, and that is where he was succeeded by Pope St. Linus.

Following an attack by Saracen pirates that damaged St. Peter’s in 846, Pope Leo IV ordered the construction of a wall to protect the holy basilica and its associated precincts. Completed in 852, the 39-foot-tall wall enclosed what was inaugurated Leonine City, an area covering the current Vatican territory and the Borgo district.
