If you own a diesel car, you’ve probably heard the dangers (and potential expense) caused by running out of fuel. That’s because the powerful fuel injectors in diesel engines start pulling in lots of air once there’s no more fuel in the tank, and this can have a catastrophic effect on different components within the system.
The fuel at the very bottom of the tank could have sediment in it – something that usually occurs in older cars – which can damage the fuel lines, block the fuel filter and even damage the engine itself. At the point of having zero fuel in your tank, your fuel pump will start to draw in air.
This is actually true of most in-tank fuel pumps used in fuel injected vehicles whether it’s diesel or gasoline. Bottom line is, don’t run your fuel low, as you can be causing your fuel system issues. It probably won’t hurt the engine itself, though. Older diesel systems had to siphon fuel from the tank.

Why is it bad to run a diesel engine out of fuel? – General [M]ayhem
The fuel is a lubricant ( and this crap ULSD,ultra low sulfur diesel has very poor lubricity ) so when it goes dry, it loose it’s prime AND you have high pressure metal on metal wear that destroys internals. Even running a slight dilution of gasoline with diesel on the new ULSD lower the lubricity enough to cause damage.
engine – What happens when you run out of fuel? – Motor Vehicle …
When you run out of fuel, parts tend to heat up, more-so the pumps than the injectors, because at least the primary pump will continue to try and pump with having the aide of the fuel to cool it. This is actually true of most in-tank fuel pumps used in fuel injected vehicles whether it’s diesel or gasoline.
Why running out of fuel is a very, very bad idea
What happens to your car if you run out of fuel If you run it down to nothing, you engine will start drawing air. A build-up of air can prevent the car from starting even when you’ve filled it up again, so carrying on because you’ve got some petrol in the boot isn’t a good idea. If you drive a diesel, you’re risking serious damage to your engine.

the injectors rely on the diesel being pressurized to lift the seat off the seal so that the diesel can pass through the injector’s orifice. fluids don’t compress, so that’s why the seat lifts. when you run injectors dry you end up getting air in the system and air compresses so that it won’t lift the seat
Does running completely out of gas have any negative effects on the car …
Answer (1 of 12): Running a gas engine out of fuel doesn’t hurt the engine, but it can have negative effects on the fuel pump. Fuel pumps are either cooled by the gas around them or by the gas that is flowing through them. If you run out of gas, the fuel pump isn’t being cooled anymore and you c…
8 Facts About Diesel Engine Idle You Need To Know – learn diesels
Jun 22, 2022This will cause more oil to pass by the piston rings and create a large amount of blow-by. The main reason this causes the damage it does is that diesels need to operate at higher temperatures. To get a complete burn of the fuel, a diesel needs a very high combustion chamber temperature. Without this temperature, there will be carbon build-up.
