Honesty and sincerity are essential in science—in our research activities, interpersonal relationships, and communication. We do not often think of these as aspects of personal style, but they affect how others perceive us and our work, and they are critical in negotiation and conflict resolution.
Intellectual honesty in proposing, performing, and reporting research refers to honesty with respect to the meaning of one’s research. It is expected that researchers present proposals and data honestly and communicate their best understanding of the work in writing and verbally.
Thus, honesty is dependent on other dispositions which scientists must cultivate and maintain: meticulousness, reasoning, skepticism, and sharing transparently (which requires social risk). In my interviews, undergraduate researchers tend to mention that these are qualities they must actively seek to build, as they learn how to be a scientist.
