Gaëtan Dugas (French: [ɡaetɑ̃ dyɡa]; February 19, 1952 – March 30, 1984) was a Québécois Canadian flight attendant and a relatively early HIV patient who once was widely regarded as “Patient Zero,” or the primary case for AIDS in the United States.
He was a Canadian and worked for Air Canada as a flight attendant. He was also known as the alleged patient zero for AIDS. He regarded as one of the highly sexually active men who had spread HIV before the disease was identified. In 1984 traced many of New York City’s early HIV infections to an unnamed infected homosexual male flight attendant.
Many readers of the report—including some in the CDC—misconstrued the letter “O” to be the numeral “0” (zero), resulting in the origin of the term “Patient Zero.” The extent to which HIV/AIDS was known about in the early 1980s, how it was spread, or when Dugas was diagnosed are disputed.
There was a great deal of conjecture in the late 1980’s about Patient Zero, identified as Gaetan Dugas – a Canadian flight attendant who purportedly knowingly infected as many as 250 men a year on both sides of the Atlantic – said to have singlehandedly started the epidemic, but most of this is now largely discredited.
