Here’s a brief history of atomic theory: Greek philosopher Democritus. Atomic theory originated as a philosophical concept in ancient India and Greece. The word “atom” comes from the ancient Greek word atomos, which means indivisible. According to atomism, matter consists of discrete particles.
However, the theory was one of many explanations for matter and wasn’t based on empirical data. In the fifth century BCE, Democritus proposed that matter consists of indestructible, indivisible units called atoms. The Roman poet Lucretius recorded the idea, so it survived through the Dark Ages for later consideration.
The model and its validation in 1908 by Jean Perrin supported atomic theory and particle theory. Up to this point, atoms were believed to be the smallest units of matter.

A Brief History of Atomic Theory – ThoughtCo
Atomic theory is a scientific description of the nature of atoms and matter that combines elements of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. According to modern theory, matter is made of tiny particles called atoms, which are in turn made up of subatomic particles.Atoms of a given element are identical in many respects and different from atoms of other elements.

Who proposed the first atomic view of matter? Democritus (Democritus reasoned that matter is made from building blocks of infinitesimally small pieces which he called atomos, meaning “indivisible.” He theorized that these were specific to the material that they made up and that different materials would be made up of different kinds of atomos.)

Leucippus and Democritus | Encyclopedia.com
LEUCIPPUS AND DEMOCRITUS. Leucippus and Democritus were the earliest Greek atomists. The originator of the atomic theory, Leucippus (fifth century BCE), must be considered a speculative thinker of the first order, but to Democritus (c. 460 – c. 370 BCE) must go the credit for working out the detailed application of the theory and supporting it with a subtle epistemology.
