From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Augustus of Prima Porta (Italian: Augusto di Prima Porta) is a full-length portrait statue of Augustus Caesar, the first emperor of the Roman Empire. The marble statue stands 2.08 meters tall and weighs 1,000 kg.
The statue of Augustus of Prima Porta was discovered within the Villa of Livia in 1863, however little is known about the discovery itself and its immediate aftermath, as the incomplete archaeological journals leave ambiguous evidence for modern historians. As such, the exact location of the statue within the villa is unknown.
As the gate was the first sign that travellers to Rome had reached the city of Rome, it became known as the Prima Porta, or first door. hence the name given to the statue. The statue is at once allegorical and political. Augustus is in military dress, wearing a highly decorated cuirass (breastplate) and a cloak draped around his hips.
