Who Killed Lovelace In A Duel In Clarissa

In Lovelace’s letters to his friend Belford, Richardson shows that what really drives his character to conquest and finally to rape is revenge for her family’s insults and his sense of Clarissa’s moral superiority. Neither recovers: Clarissa suffers temporary insanity, while Lovelace, sick with guilt, is killed in a duel.

In one of the many letters sent to Lovelace, he writes “if the divine Clarissa asks me to slit thy throat, Lovelace, I shall do it in an instance.”. Eventually, surrounded by strangers and her cousin, Col. Morden, Clarissa dies in the full consciousness of her virtue and trusting in a better life after death.

A duel between the two, in which Lovelace wounds James but spares his life, crystallizes their hatred. The family becomes suspicious of Clarissa, forbids her from corresponding with Lovelace, and commands her to marry a horrible rich man named Roger Solmes.
