The first Westerner to describe Angkor Wat was Antionio da Madalena, a Portuguese monk, in 1586 (Hingham, 2001). He wrote that the site was “impossible to describe with pen”.
As the flooding destroyed the infrastructure, the city of Angkor collapsed. In 1431, it was taken by the Siamese army. Many of the temples were later overgrown by jungle, while others remained important religious sites for the Khmer. The ruins were unknown to the West until French explorers were taken there in the 1860s.
French naturalist Henri Mouhout wrote extensive descriptions of the temple that were published after his death. Mouhout, who visited Angkor Wat in the middle of the 19th century, described the monument as grander than any architectural legacy of the Greeks or Romans.
