The Long Parliament was an English Parliament which lasted from 1640 until 1660. It followed the fiasco of the Short Parliament, which had convened for only three weeks during the spring of 1640 after an 11-year parliamentary absence. In September 1640, King Charles I issued writs summoning a parliament to convene on 3 November 1640.
The early sessions of the Long Parliament were dominated by attempts to limit the King’s autocratic and arbitrary use of his powers. Parliamentary opposition was orchestrated by John Pym who initially focused his criticism upon the King’s advisers rather than the King himself.
