What do we know about cellular respiration? Cellular respiration, as we know it, is the process by which cells release energy to power their activities. This process is technically a combustion reaction, although it does not resemble it in the living cell. It is a controlled release of energy. During the first stage of cellular respiration, glucose is broken down into two 3-carbon pyruvate molecules. The resulting products of glycolysis include ATP and NADH. Both are temporary stores of energy.
The reactions in cellular respiration are essentially two-step processes. Oxygen helps convert glucose into ATP by passing through the respiratory system. The first step releases two molecules of ATP, and subsequent steps release much more. The process is carried out in mitochondria, where most reactions take place. ATP is produced during aerobic cellular respiration, while glucose is released from foodstuffs.
The second stage of cellular respiration is anaerobic. This involves the transfer of electrons from a cell’s internal membrane to its outer surface. Electrons move from one component to another, through a complex of proteins. This chain, called the electron transport chain, uses atmospheric oxygen as a final electron acceptor. Four multiprotein complexes embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and two diffusible electron carriers pass electrons between the components of the chain. This energy is then used to pump hydrogen ions across the inner membrane.
Pyruvate enters mitochondria under aerobic conditions and proceeds into the Krebs cycle, where it is transferred to coenzyme A. This molecule of coenzyme A has a variety of pathways, but it is typically delivered to the citric acid cycle for catabolism. This process also removes a molecule of carbon dioxide, but it also removes two high-energy electrons. NADH and NAD+ carry these electrons to a later pathway for ATP production.
