The Americanization movement was not a benevolent government program that sought to assimilate immigrants into American society so much as it was an avenue for American opponents of immigration to vent their frustrations about immigrants. Such an atmosphere of hostility could not produce greater assimilation.
The Americanization Movement began as a concerted effort to integrate immigrants and encourage patriotism and productivity. The Americanization Movement initially took the form of English language classes and courses in American civics, but the process also suffered from a vague definition of “Americanization.” It began in the early twentieth century and spread to include public educational policies, business support, and even national holidays.
The large influx of immigrants tested the belief that the United States was able to easily assimilate immigrants from foreign countries. Its nativist opponents rallied in the Know-Nothing Party to push back against the assimilation movement, arguing that the newcomers’ customs and languages would destroy the nation. Meanwhile, anglo-conformists supported less drastic methods to assimilate immigrants. Assimilation of immigrants was particularly burdensome in public schools.
In the 1910s, the first efforts of the Americanization movement were made by the National Association of Civic Leagues (NACLI). This organization, which was funded by the government, helped immigrants integrate by developing a curriculum on civics and English for a smaller group. The CIA’s funding helped the immigrant rights movement immensely, since without it, the Federal Bureau of Education would not have been able to assist immigrants and immigrant families. This group eventually received government funding and eventually died.
In response to this, the city government banned red flags. The government also passed laws restricting the use of the flag. The Americanization movement began to lose its popularity as immigrants were perceived as a threat to social harmony. After World War II, the postwar influx of Southern and Eastern European immigrants resulted in a quota law, restricting the number of foreign immigrants coming to the United States. As a result, Asians were virtually banned from immigration entirely.
