Which Countries Ruled Vietnam As An Imperial Or Colonial Power

French colonialism in Vietnam lasted more than six decades. By the late 1880s, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were all controlled by France and collectively referred to as Indochine Français (French Indochina). Indochina became one of France’s most important colonial possessions.

The Empire of Vietnam ( Vietnamese: Đế-quốc Việt-Nam; Literary Chinese and Japanese: 越南帝國) was a short-lived puppet state of Imperial Japan governing the former French protectorates of Annam and Tonkin between March 11 and August 25, 1945. At the end of its rule, the empire also successfully reclaimed Cochinchina as part of Vietnam.

Both were swept by the Chinese Han dynasty expansion from the north – the Han conquest of Nanyue brought parts of Vietnam under the Chinese rule in 111 BC. Traditional Chinese became the official language as well as the later developed independent Nôm script of Vietnamese.

In 1861 France occupied Saigon, and by 1883 it had taken control of all of Vietnam as well as Laos and Cambodia. French colonial rule was, for the most part, politically repressive and economically exploitative.
