Giant squid can be found in oceans around the world at depths of at least 2,950 feet, but their exact geographic range is unknown.
Range and habitat The giant squid is widespread, occurring in all of the world’s oceans.
Giant Squid. Giant squid are some of the largest cephalopods in the world, second only to the colossal squid. These mysterious creatures owe their size to deep-sea living. Scientists aren’t quite sure how many species of these squid live in the deep sea, mainly because it is so difficult to study animals in the depths!
But after years of searching, in 2012 a group of scientists from Japan’s National Science Museum along with colleagues from Japanese public broadcaster NHK and the Discovery Channel filmed a giant squid in its natural habitat for the first time. The species was first recorded live in 2006
###

Do giant squids eat whales?
Sperm whales are the only known regular predator of giant squids (and are really great at finding them too). Juvenile giant squids are prey to smaller whales, such as pilot whales, deep-sea sharks and other predatory fish. For once, humans are not a predator! Giant squids do have a few tricks to try to avoid predators.
What is the main predator of giant squid?
They eat small and large fishes (including the Patagonian toothfish) and other squids. Their tentacles are covered with suckers that are equipped with strong, sharp hooks, used in both capturing prey and fighting off predation.

What is the giant squids habitat like?
From what scientists have surmised, giant squids live in the deep sea, close to slopes in the sea floor. They are most frequently found near continental shelf slopes, and islands slopes. Because so little is known about these squids, they may very well frequent other deep-sea habitats as well.
Where do giant colossal squid live?
Habitat. Colossal squid live in Antarctic waters, but may come as far north as the southern waters of New Zealand. They live at depths of 1000 metres or more.
How large can a giant squid get?
If a startling new study is right, giant squid up to 66 feet (20 meters) long may dwell in the open ocean. The estimate is nearly twice as large as some prior findings, which had pegged the beast’s maximum total length between 33 and 43 feet (10 and 13 meters).
How big is the largest squid?
Least concern. The giant squid remains largely a mystery to scientists despite being the biggest invertebrate on Earth. The largest of these elusive giants ever found measured 59 feet in length and weighed nearly a ton.
What is the biggest giant squid ever found?
The largest confirmed colossal squid weight is 1,090 pounds based off of a live specimen captured in 2007; however, based on colossal squid beaks that have been recovered, scientists predict they can reach weights up to 1,300-1,500 pounds.
Are colossal squids bigger than giant squids?
Colossal squid vs giant squid Colossal squid Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni are slightly shorter than giant squid Architeuthis dux, but have a larger, heavier body. Te Papa’s colossal squid tips the scales at a massive 490 kg. In contrast, giant squid weigh up to about 275 kg.
