The Eyemouth Disaster, or ’Black Friday’ as it came to be known locally, was a major disaster resulting in the death of 189 fishermen who were out in their boats. It was a catastrophe, decimating communities. Ten percent of Eyemouth’s male population – 129 men – died that day.

The Eyemouth disaster was a severe European windstorm that struck the south-eastern coast of Scotland on 14 October 1881. The Eyemouth skippers, however, along with a number of fishermen from nearby ports, ignored the weather warnings and set out at the crack of dawn. By midday they were in the teeth of a severe storm for which their wooden boats were no match.

In June 1845 a new vicar, the Reverend Stephen Bell took charge of the Established church at Eyemouth and set about transforming the town through the promotion of social institutions such as a savings bank, library, lectures, and prayer meetings.
