The Special Air Service began life in July 1941, during the Second World War, from an unorthodox idea and plan by Lieutenant David Stirling (of the Scots Guards) who was serving with No. 8 (Guards) Commando.
There are just over 160 Essential Air Service airports in the U.S., with about 60 of them being in the state of Alaska alone. The EAS airports in the lower 48 states and Hawaii are depicted in the map below along with the corresponding logo of the airline currently flying there.
