When Was Anansi Created

The Anansi stories were introduced to Jamaica in the 1600s by the Akan people of the Gold Coast, who were brought to the New World as slaves. The stories were told and retold in the three Twi dialects—Ashanti, Fanti, and Akwapim—which were by far the most im- portant African sources of Jamaican patois.

Tales of Anansi, also known as Kwaku Anansi, originated in West Africa, to be more specific among the Akan ethnic group who primarily live in present-day Ghana and some parts of the Ivory Coast. In the myths and folktales, Anansi is depicted as spider or a hybrid creature – that is half man and half spider.

He is among several West African tricksters including Br’er Rabbit and Leuk Rabbit. Spider tales are found extensively throughout West Africa, but the Anansi tales originating from Ghana are among the best-known, as Anansi’s name comes from the word in the Akan language for “spider”.

Among many stories attached to Anansi and collected in literature, one explains how he became known as the owner of all stories in the world.
