Scientific models are used to explain and predict the behaviour of real objects or systems and are used in a variety of scientific disciplines, ranging from physics and chemistry to ecology and the Earth sciences.

Sometimes a model, even a preliminary one, can help your work decisively, and in such a case it will also affect the logical process of analysis. There are three alternatives which are discussed in more detail later on:
