COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Senate members could soon debate and adopt a new design for the state flag. The 2021 State House session ended with no new version of the flag, despite attempts by some lawmakers to come up with one. South Carolina is one of the few states without an official state flag.
On January 26, 1861, the South Carolina General Assembly adopted a new flag by adding a golden palmetto encircled with a white background. This flag has become known as the “2-day flag” because the golden palmetto was changed to its current design after two days on January 28 to a simple white palmetto on the blue background.
The canton contains a white crescent. The flag of South Carolina is a symbol of the U.S. state of South Carolina consisting of a blue field with a white palmetto tree and white crescent. Roots of this design have existed in some form since 1775, being based on one of the first Revolutionary War flags.
In 2000, following a lengthy fight between the state and the NAACP, lawmakers reached a compromise to move the flag from the Capitol dome to a monument for Confederate soldiers on the statehouse grounds, and to replace the large flag with a smaller battle standard. If Monday is any indication, it may soon disappear from the grounds entirely.
