The modern hamburger was developed in the United States, but by the end of World War II, around the middle of the 20th century, it began to spread to other countries as fast food became globalized. The main cause of this gradual globalization was the successes of the large restaurant chains.

A new study has found that hamburgers are becoming more and more popular worldwide. In France, usually known for more glamorous dishes, burgers are even now one of the most-served foods. About 75 percent of food establishments now have at least one hamburger (aka “le burger”) on their menus.

These days you get chicken, fish and even vegan hamburgers that are all still called hamburgers! But there was a definite time in history where hamburgers became a ‘thing’. It indeed started with White Castle, who opened the first hamburger restaurant chain in 1921.

To be clear, burgers have been popular in Australia for some time. In the mid-20th century, for example, Coles (in its Coles Cafeteria stores) sold hamburgers. And who hasn’t eaten a fish and chip shop burger?
