Oral epitheliolysis (also known as shedding oral mucosa or oral mucosal peeling) is a rarely described and often unrecognised superficial desquamation of oral mucosa that may be caused by sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) containing oral hygiene products, though some cases appear idiopathic.
Sir, peeling of the oral mucosa is rarely encountered in clinical practice and consequently it can cause diagnostic confusion for unfamiliar practitioners. Therefore, we would like to share an interesting case of oral mucosal peeling that we have recently encountered.
This is where the teeth rub against the cheek (and is normal). Some types of oral piercings that get into contact with inside the mouth skin may cause ulceration and skin peeling. Mouth ulcers can also be due to burns from hot foods or drinks. They present as white blisters. These blisters usually peel off soon afterwards.
Frequent contact of these acids with the buccal mucosa may cause contact dermatitis which, in turn, may lead to peeling off of the oral mucosa. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): Sodium lauryl sulfate is a type of surfactant used in almost 99% of the toothpastes.
