What Caterpillars Eat Passion Flower Leaves

Looking up their spiny red and black features online, I discovered that I had Gulf Fritillary caterpillars (Agraulis vanillae). It turns out that Gulf Fritillarys exclusively eat various species of passionvine (Passiflora spp.) the same way that Monarchs exclusively eat various species of milkweed (Asclepias spp.).

First, it depends on the species of butterfly caterpillar. Some butterfly species can eat and grow on some passion vine species that will kill others. These are species we have personally raised and did our own experiments with them.

The tiny caterpillar babies favor these passion fruit vines leaves (maracuya) and will quickly grow much larger. We’re not sure if they eat anything else on the farm, and we haven’t seen a lot of these butterflies, but have discovered dozens of egg groupings.
