What Are The Major Landforms In Mexico

Physiographic regions. Mexico can be divided into nine major physiographic regions: Baja California, the Pacific Coastal Lowlands, the Mexican Plateau, the Sierra Madre Oriental, the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Cordillera Neo-Volcánica, the Gulf Coastal Plain, the Southern Highlands, and the Yucatán Peninsula.

Mexico’s landscape includes tropical rain forests, deserts and seashores, and much of the country is covered by high plateaus and rugged mountains. Many of its canyons, such as Copper Canyon in the state of Chihuahua, are deeper than America’s Grand Canyon and are so difficult to reach that they have yet to be explored.

In addition to the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico is home to a number of other mountain ranges, including the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Peninsular Ranges. Mexico’s volcanic ranges include the Pico de Orizaba volcano, which is the third-highest peak in North America.

It is located between the Sierra Madres Mountains, in the center of the country. The plateau receives a large amount of rain, and because volcanoes surround it, has very fertile soil. The central portion of the Mexican Plateau is home to the capital of the nation, Mexico City.
