Within a few years, backpacks had gone from novelty to necessity. Competitors popped up, too. By the late 1980s, nearly every kid walking to school was wearing a backpack.
In 1938, when Gerry Outdoors invented the first backpack with a zipper, backpacks were still primarily in use for hiking, camping and alpine recreation.
While the idea of strapping your gear to your back is older than we can say, the modern student backpack is quite young—only about 44 years old—and has seen many new fads and changes in a short amount of time. From leather straps to JanSport packs, here’s a look at how students have carried their books through the years:
Between the 1930s and ‘60s, some kids also made use of canvas or leather bags with a single strap, miniature briefcases that were usually called satchels, for trips to and from school. Some students could also be seen carrying their academic luggage on their backs in squared leather bags, fastened shut with buckles.
When did they start making backpacks?
Gerry Outdoors claims to have created the very first “modern nylon backpack in existence” in 1967 (the same year JanSport opened up shop). The smaller and lighter backpack caught on among other gear brands, and became immensely popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
What was the first backpack?
The first to officially move toward the modern backpack was Henry Merriam. In 1878, Merriam was issued a patent for his Knapsack: a pack which used an external sheet-metal frame. The knapsack was invented for use by the US Army. Instead of shoulder straps, the metal frame held the pack away from the soldier’s body.

Why is Japan called randoseru?
To honor the soldiers of the country, the shape of the backpack resembled the backpacks used in the military. This quite immediately became the fashion, and the shape has continued to become the randoseru used today. However, at that time most of the Japanese people could not afford such an expensive bag.
What is a Japanese school bag called?

Why do Japanese kids wear a pouch?
Having a good bag that balances the weight of all the things they need for school as well as doesn’t negatively affect their posture is important. And above all, the randoseru has a symbolic and emotional value for young Japanese as it represents the start of a new phase in life.
When did randoseru begin?
The city started this program 45 years ago, at a time when the Japanese economy was struggling from the 1973 oil crisis. The local government thought that providing randoseru would help ease the financial burden on the region’s families.
How much does a randoseru cost?
Typically randoseru from department stores or traditional workshops will be priced in the region of 55,000-70,000 yen, with some models (particularly those branded with logos) reaching over 100,000 yen.
What is inside randoseru?

Worn over the shoulders, it leaves both hands free; a flap covers an extra-wide opening that allows easy access to textbooks and notebooks inside.
