Was There Ever a Black Duke? is an upcoming Netflix series that revolves around a Black duke who falls in love with the eldest daughter of a wealthy family, Daphne. The show explores racial and social issues of the time, and its rich historical detail makes for an engaging watch. The cast includes Rege-Jean Page as the Duke of Hastings, played by Rege-Jean Page.
The show is based on a historical alternative universe where a black queen rules London society. Its casting leans into the recent argument that Queen Charlotte was black. However, it does not mention the real Queen Charlotte. So, who was the Black queen in history? And what about her role in the Civil War? Did she play a central role in the revolution? The answer is no, but perhaps we should give her more credit than she deserves.
Despite this controversy, there are several accounts that show that Black people lived in Regency times. Some estimates have Black people living in London during Jane Austen’s time, and an additional 30,000 in England, Scotland, and Ireland. But even with all this diversity, there were still less than a dozen black dukes. While most of them were similar to the gentleman on the left, there are sources that list only 28 Black dukes during the Regency.
One such instance is the Alessandro de’ Medici, the first black head of state in the modern world. He was the son of a slave. He was the first black Duke and the future pope, but unfortunately, his assassination by his cousin is considered to be a travesty of justice. This is an example of the way the history of the institution has been shaped by racial issues.
