Was There A Slavery Clause In The Declaration Of Independence

Did the Declaration of Independence have a slavery clause? Many historians have debated whether or not it did, with different outcomes. However, one important aspect to consider is the nature of the complaint. The earliest draft of the document contained an unpopular censure of slavery, and the letter even mentions George III, who was connected to the slave trade. It is likely that Jefferson had a personal stake in ensuring the abolition of slavery.

Jefferson’s reasoning for eliminating the clause was simple: to keep the colonists from identifying George III as their slave maker, and to prevent them from seeing him as a master. This is true to an extent, but it doesn’t justify enslaving people who aren’t yours. Instead, it’s equivalent to accepting stolen goods. The Declaration of Independence has no explicit stipulation against slavery, but a reference to it does appear.

However, the debate surrounding the inclusion of a slavery clause in the Constitution was focused on the wording of the provision. Originally, the Constitution’s draft used the term “legally held in a State” to describe slavery. The final version changed this wording to “legally held” in response to some critics, who thought the term equivocal, giving the impression that slavery was legal both in a moral sense and under the law. In actuality, the Constitution treats slavery as both legal and moral, but does not include slavery as such.

As we know, the 13 original colonies were deeply divided on the issue of slavery. Some Founders advocated emancipation, while others advocated for abolition. Jefferson, a slave-owner himself, had tried to stop the importation of slaves from the British in 1772, but was unsuccessful because King George III prevented the Virginia Assembly from taking action. So the eradication of any reference to slavery in the Declaration of Independence was ultimately political and not ideological.
