Was The Dawes Act Successful

What was wrong with the Dawes Act? Impact of the Dawes Act Rather than helping them as its creators intended, the Dawes Act had decidedly negative effects on Indigenous peoples. It ended their tradition of farming communally held land which had for centuries ensured them a home and individual identity in the tribal community.

The purpose of the Dawes Act and the subsequent acts that extended its initial provisions was purportedly to protect Indian property rights, particularly during the land rushes of the 1890s, but in many instances the results were vastly different. The land allotted to the Indians included desert or near-desert lands unsuitable for farming.

The Dawes Act failed because the plots were too small for sustainable agriculture. The Native American Indians lacked tools, money, experience or expertise in farming. The farming lifestyle was a completely alien way of life. The Bureau of Indian Affairs failed to manage the process fairly or efficiently.
