Did Vikings invade Europe and found Russia? If so, the Vikings had some influence over its history. In the 9th century, the Varangians, or “Rus”, founded a state on the Dnieper River. Trade commodities included slaves, furs, and wax. Their ruling class embraced local Slavs and Finns and became part of the Russian culture. But the Vikings also brought new ideas to the land.
While Vikings brought Christianity to Europe, they did not bring it with them. Rather, they introduced Christianity to Russia. In the ninth century, Greek missionaries from Byzantium spread Christianity throughout Kievan Rus. Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius translated the Bible into the Old Church Slavonic language. This resulted in the Christianization of the Slavs. But what about the Scandinavians and their influence on Rus?
The first state-like formations emerged in present-day Russia during the 9th century. Mongols and Vikings ruled the country for 250 years before Moscow was founded as the capital of Kievan Rus. But the country only remained a state until 1547. Then, the Vikings invaded Russia once more and conquered its eastern part. And then, it came under the influence of the Byzantine and Orthodox faith.
There are also many myths claiming that the early Scandinavians settled in Russia. For example, the Chronicle of Noah claims that the three sons of Noah were divided up between two areas. In the latter case, Ham and Shem each received a certain area on the eastern side. Japeth, on the other hand, established order in his territory. Later, his people are known as the Khazars of Central Asia.
