Is it true that Princess Diana was buried in a lead lined coffin? Obviously, it would not have been a very dignified burial. Diana’s body is now interred in the crypt of a medieval church alongside her father’s remains. But it isn’t the idyllic island in Althorp Park that we have been led to believe. Sadly, there’s no way of knowing if this is the truth.
The royal family traditionally uses lead lined coffins. In the case of Princess Diana, the coffin weighed more than 50 stone, and was 14×50 inches, making it over 700 pounds. It is unclear how much lead was used to line the coffin, but it was enough to preserve Diana’s body for up to a year. The royal coffin was manufactured by the firm Leverton & Sons, which had inherited the royal caskets from JH Kenyon.
The coffins were sealed so that they would last longer in wet or heavy clay soil. However, if the coffin was unlined, the body would turn into a skeleton in 10 years. Although this is traditional for British royals, the fact remains that Princess Diana was not married to Prince Charles when she passed away. She was known as Lady Diana Spencer at the time.
The coffins used for the burial of the princess were designed to be airtight, preventing moisture from penetrating the body. The lead lining also kept the body in a perfect condition for up to a year. The lead lining of the coffin made the coffin a quarter of a ton. The fact that the coffin was so heavy also makes the question of the coffin’s weight incontrovertible.
