Was the Wizard of Oz a real place? If so, why were its characters so unreal? The answer to this question depends on how you interpret the story. The original version states that Oz is a real place and Dorothy lives there forever. It was changed to a dream by MGM executives because they were wary of the fantasy elements. However, this version seems to be more accurate. Regardless of how you interpret the events of the story, it remains one of the most beloved fantasy movies of all time.
The screenplay began to take shape in 1951 when writer Arthur Freed was hired by the director to produce the film. He was initially an assistant to LeRoy, but gained experience from the production. He went on to produce other MGM musicals, including Meet Me in St. Louis and Singin’ in the Rain. The film’s official production number was MGM Production #1060, and Freed later became MGM’s chief of production.
In this version of the classic book, L. Sprague de Camp introduces a gay fan to the cast, which echoes the character that Dorothy had in the original novel. The character was so popular that the term “friend of Dorothy” came to mean “homosexual” after the film’s release. Although many modern gay men still love the story, it remains a popular fantasy, and Laumer did a great job of putting it into a contemporary setting.
