MLK wrote this sermon during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War when the nation’s fears were rooted in racism and war. Dr. King believed that fear was a major cause of conflict and prescribed love as its remedy.
Half a century after his death, Martin Luther King Jr. remains a hero to millions of people. But with every hero comes a dark side. “Never meet your heroes” is a wise American proverb, and it could easily have been written by a starstruck Civil Rights advocate in the ’60s who met, and was disappointed by, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
You might think it’s a little disrespectful to refer to a great American hero by his initials but, in this specific case, it’s perfectly fine. The actual Martin Luther King Jr who lived and breathed is not the man most people will be honoring today because that Martin Luther King is dead and gone.
