Was Iran A British Colony? Many British visitors to Iran disapproved of the despotism and political system in place. However, they did praise the Iranians, whom they viewed as inquisitive, cosmopolitan, and engaging. The political system of the day prevented the Iranians from realising their potential. The British government and the Iranian government had to make painful compromises before they could achieve this goal.
The Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 resulted in the partitioning of Iran into spheres of influence. The majority of these spheres went to Russia and the south-east corner of Iran remained in the British zone, which was of little political significance. However, it did provide a buffer zone for British India. However, Lord Curzon and the Liberal government criticized this move as shortsighted. However, they were unaware of the ramifications of the agreement.
It’s important to remember that the Anglo-Persian Agreement was a misjudged agreement and Britain’s actions were limited by the Iranian claim. But even if the British had been in a position to help Iran, they would have had to do so only if they had a functioning government. After the First World War, Iran was not fully functioning. Nonetheless, British involvement became a part of the Iranian narrative, and the agency to change remained with the Iranians.
The academics who argue against the idea of Iranian imperialism are the loudest and most creative critics of the West. They’ve long been obsessed with “cocacolonization” and draw parallels between European colonization and ongoing American and Israeli colonialism. They’ve also been quick to point out how Iranian aggression is reminiscent of European imperialism and British oppression. They’ve even started a television show titled Uncle Napoleon to mock the British government.
