Was Henry Viii A Good Monarch

Many people have questioned whether or not Henry VIII was a good monarch. While the Tudors ruled in an era where monarchs were not supposed to rule, Henry VIII ruled well and left the country in better shape than it was before. The man’s ambitions were not limited to the realm. He also sought absolute power and kept his people in line. He could give orders and change his mind at will, which showed that he was an authoritative ruler. This also made Henry VIII a fascinating character.

As a monarch, Henry VIII had many faults, including a tendency to spend lavishly. His extravagant lifestyle and spending of dissipated monasteries emptied the coffers of his kingdom. In addition, Henry VIII’s lavish lifestyle and foreign wars forced the closing of several Catholic strongholds. He also used his wealth to build a lavish home and lavishly entertain his royal guests.

A man of great physical strength, Henry VIII was a formidable leader and nationalist. He launched a campaign against France in 1513 and captured the medieval cities of Tournai and Therouanne. With these victories, Henry would have gained a foothold in France beyond the port of Calais. Although this may seem like a good start, there was a darker side to Henry’s reign. His attempts at peace with France did not lead to the completion of his objectives. The French refused to recognise his right to rule all of the Englishmen.

Though Henry VIII was committed to self-preservation, his efforts to protect the Crown and his country were not completely successful. In the 1520s, Henry’s chief minister, Thomas Wolsey, failed to solve the ’great matter’. In 1528, Wolsey, his heir, was incapable of protecting himself from the plague. Although Henry took steps to safeguard himself from ill health, he did not fully protect himself.
