Is Alexander Hamilton’s infamous letter to his friend John Jay the basis for the book Was Hamilton The Deciding Vote? The answer may surprise you. While Hamilton was one of the most brilliant public figures of the founding generation, his letter to John Jay was not about the presidency. In fact, it was written to discuss an issue that had come to his attention: how to defeat Jefferson after his election. While he was a lawyer, Hamilton understood the political context and saw that the Federalist Party’s delegates were the ones who needed to vote against Jefferson.
The idea of an Electoral College is not as old-fashioned as it sounds. In fact, the Electoral College idea was introduced just one year before the first election. Hamilton, who had a history of supporting American independence, lobbied to tip the election in his favor. His role was far from prominent; he viewed Jefferson as less of an existential threat. However, Hamilton’s argument is not entirely without merit.
The first tier of the Electoral College was comprised of electors from each state. These electors would serve for life. The second tier would elect the president, who would serve for life, but also enjoy veto power over Congress. Hamilton’s scheme was accepted by Jefferson, whose administration would not challenge it. However, in the thirty-sixth vote, James Bayard abstained, which was crucial to ensuring the success of his plan.
