Was Engels a socialist? That question recurs throughout Engels’s work. His political and social theory are based on his experiences as a cotton importer from Manchester, where he had recently finished his year as a lieutenant in the Guard-Artillery. The author recalls that he had been horrified by conditions such as child labour and poor wages, as well as the social power of the oppressors. He then cites various sources to support his position.

A socialist must have strong beliefs to be a socialist. Engels was an early advocate of communism and a popular expounder of Marxism. In his 1880 book Socialism: Utopian and Scientific, he rewrote some of his earlier polemic against Eugen Duhring. Engels’s work was subsequently translated by Marx’s son-in-law, Paul Lafargue, and issued in French. After a few more translations, Socialism was translated into English in 1892. Engels authored a special introduction for Socialism: Utopian and Scientific.

Although he initially claimed to be a democratic-republican, Engels was influenced by the revolutionary spirit of the Chartist movement. His socialist views led him to come into contact with the communist wing of this movement, as well as the Owenite communists. These encounters shaped his political philosophy and he eventually turned socialist. His book “The Condition of the Working Class in England” established his reputation as a revolutionary political economist.
