Was Egypt Part Of The Ottoman Empire? Its history can be explained by the struggle between the Mamluks and the Ottomans for control over the beylicate. When the Mamluk bey conquered Egypt, he gained unprecedented control over the political and military structures of the region. He eventually defeated the Ottoman governor and became the Caliph of Mecca.
The Ottomans attempted to end the Mamluk power in Egypt and sent orders to their governor, Huseyin Pasha, to entrap the principal beys in Abu Qir Bay. This led to an incident when the deputy of the governor demanded a gratuity. The deputy was subsequently sent letters to Porte demanding the appointment of Kara Mustafa Pasha as governor. The new governor was appointed and a deputation from Cairo welcomed him.
During the First World War, Egypt was on the frontline of action. The Turks attempted to control the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, while the British used it as a staging area and recovery point. They also used Egypt as a land offensive against the Ottoman lands of Palestine and Transjordan. Egypt suffered the effects of the war and its economy was devastated. Inflation was an even bigger problem.
The Mamluks were the backbone of the Egyptian military during the Ayyubid Caliphate. They were recruited from the Caucasus and Balkans and were indoctrinated to serve the Sultan. They held high positions of power and had special status in the country, above the civilian Egyptians. They were eventually absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. It is not clear how many Mamluks were killed by the Ottomans, but the Mamluks were a large part of the population in Egypt.
