Dietrich Bonhoeffer, (born February 4, 1906, Breslau, Germany [now Wrocław, Poland]—died April 9, 1945, Flossenbürg, Germany), German Protestant theologian important for his support of ecumenism and his view of Christianity ’s role in a secular world. His involvement in a plot to overthrow Adolf Hitler led to his imprisonment and execution.

Since then, Bonhoeffer’s image in the church has change dramatically, with the former President of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Bishop Wolfgang Huber, calling him a “Protestant saint.” Born in 1906, Bonhoeffer grew up the sixth of eight children in Breslau (now Poland) and Berlin.

Bonhoeffer was born on 4 February 1906 in Breslau, then Germany (now Poland), into a large family. In addition to his other siblings, Dietrich had a twin sister, Sabine Bonhoeffer Leibholz: he and Sabine were the sixth and seventh children out of eight.
