Was Ben Franklin a friend of George Washington? Probably not. However, the relationship between Franklin and Washington is quite complex. The two men were a great deal more alike than they were different. Franklin had a vision of America as an empire, and he believed that Britain had subjugated the American colonies through mercantile trading rules and taxes. He felt that the British were pursuing subordination of the colonies, and the events of the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of Charleston only increased the hostility toward Britain. Yet most members of the Continental Congress were not quite as ready for revolution as they were, and many colonial legislatures had instructed their delegates to resist independence.
While in his mid-twenties, Franklin was a printer, a merchant, and a newspaper proprietor. He had spent time in London, and was inspired by this time to create two institutions that are still important today. He founded the American Philosophical Society and the Library Company of Philadelphia, the first public lending library in America. The latter later became the University of Pennsylvania. But what made Franklin a friend of George Washington isn’t so much the friendship.
While both men were friendly with each other, there were some instances where the two men disagreed. Washington, for one, was annoyed with Franklin’s continual recommendation for commissions of European volunteers. In 1777, Washington asked Franklin to stop this behavior, as the French were nearing Philadelphia. The two men had a history of disagreements, but despite differences in their political views, they remained close friends. In fact, Franklin was Washington’s “right hand man” and was the source of many of Washington’s greatest achievements.
