Is it true that Australia was once a prison? Convicts were transported to Australia for a variety of crimes. They were sentenced to penal transportation for seven, fourteen, and sometimes life terms. While transported to Australia, they were kept in appalling conditions, and many died of cholera and other illnesses. In addition, convicts were not allowed to stand up, and a lack of supplies caused widespread hunger.
The British government wanted to find a way to reform convicts, and they set out to find a way to do it. They decided to transport convicts to Botany Bay, using Captain Cook’s reports as a guide. They wanted to eliminate the hulks of old warships along the Thames, and hoped that a successful penology experiment would solve the riddle of convicts and make them think twice before committing a crime. The first fleet of ships to transport convicts to Australia consisted of eleven ships and two navy warships. The convicts were transported to Australia in 1786, and Captain Arthur Phillip was appointed the first governor.
Although Australia was not a prison at the time, the penal colony did have a profound effect on the modern population of Australia. In fact, a majority of convicts with tickets of leave or Certificates of Freedom remained in Australia after their sentences. After their sentences, most of them farmed, and started families. These individuals are the foundation of the modern Australian population. Thousands of people have made Australia a wonderful place to live, and the country continues to benefit from their contributions.
