How To Install A Hydraulic Clutch In Toploader 4 Speed

A part of the suggested span transcript after expanded is The throw out bearing needs to ride at a specific depth on the transmissions input shaft quartermaster says the support rail for this purpose.

I am fitting a 4 speed toploader (6 bolt bell-housing) to a 1966 289. I want to convert from a cable clutch system to hydraulic.

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions about clutches. Has anyone put a hydraulic clutch or cable clutch on their 4 speed top loader?

How do you install a hydraulic clutch release bearing?

The throw out bearing must NOT ride on the pressure plate.

Which way does the throw out bearing go?

Measure the distance from the fingers to the straight edge. Write that number down. Now, measure from the mounting face of the transmission to the face of the throwout bearing that will come in contact with the fingers on the clutch.

Should the throwout bearing touch the pressure plate?

The throw out bearing must NOT ride on the pressure plate.

How does a hydraulic clutch release bearing work?

The release bearing is held by the stationary clutch fork and, when the clutch pedal is pressed, pivots forward to contact the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate, which act like a lever to disengage the clutch, separating the mechanical link between the engine and the transmission’s input shaft.

How do you adjust a hydraulic throwout bearing?

The throw-out bearing, sometimes called a “clutch release bearing”, is a simple yet important component that’s only in use when the clutch pedal is depressed. When you have a bad throw-out bearing, it will affect shifting and can lead to failure of other clutch and transmission components.

What happens when a throwout bearing goes out?

The release bearing is held by the stationary clutch fork and, when the clutch pedal is pressed, pivots forward to contact the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate, which act like a lever to disengage the clutch, separating the mechanical link between the engine and the transmission’s input shaft.

Can you convert a cable clutch to hydraulic?

It sounds like a maneuver you’d do to someone who’s choking, but “Hymec” stands for Hydraulic from Mechanical, which is what the kit does—it allows you to convert your cable clutch to hydraulic. It offers all the benefits of a hydraulic setup and it comes fully assembled, pre-bled, and ready to install.

Can you convert a cable clutch to hydraulic motorcycle?

Their Hydraulic Clutch Conversion Kits (HYMEC) are available for a wide range of motorcycles that come stock with cable-operated clutches. The Magura HYMEC Hydraulic Clutch Conversion Kit makes it easy to convert your cable-operated clutch to hydraulically operated.

Are all T5 transmissions the same?

While there are numerous configurations of the T5, because of the large quantities of T5’s produced, many parts are interchangeable. There are now over 200 different T5 transmission assembly part numbers and almost as many ways to customize them to fit just about anything whether passenger car or light duty truck.

When would a release throw-out bearing make noise?

The most common sign of a bad throw-out bearing is when you hear various noises when you depress the clutch pedal. The rollers within the bearing have a tight tolerance and are supposed to be close together. But if there is too much space between the rollers, then different types of noises will start to be heard.

How do you check a release bearing?

Start with a road test of the vehicle. Listen for noise with the transmission in gear and the clutch pedal to the floor. Next, release the clutch with the transmission in first gear. Noise under this condition indicates a worn release bearing or a worn pilot bearing.

What is hydraulic release bearing?

The release bearing found within a cars’ clutch system is the method for engaging and disengaging the clutch by pushing against the clutch pressure plate to move the drive plate away from the flywheel.

Toploader 4 speed – what is your non-stock clutch setup

There are now several manufacturers making hyd t/o bearings to fit the top loader. Remember, a smaller master cylinder will put out more pressure than a bigger one. The cable pulls the clutch fork toward the engine to operate the clutch. Also, at some point I will be replacing the stock 8.2 10 bolt 3.08 rear end with a 12 bolt, most likely from Strange or Moser, most likely with 4.11 gears, something more geared to spirited driving and more matched to an overdrive transmission. That would be a good time to upgrade the driveshaft as well.
