What tool is used to clean the inside of a barrel?
A cleaning rod is a firearm maintenance tool that can be used to clean the inside (bore) of a gun’s barrel, and is made in different sizes for use on different barrel lengths, calibers and gauges.
Can you clean a barrel?
Clean the Barrel and Chamber Dry brush the chamber and barrel with a copper-phosphate (or nylon) bore brush in a chamber to muzzle direction. This will loosen and remove some of the large carbon and metal fouling from the bore. Place a cleaning patch dipped in bore solvent on the tip of your cleaning rod.
Is it good to clean your rifle barrel?
However, the basic answer is that you should clean your firearm before the bore becomes so fouled that it has an adverse affect on accuracy. Dirty barrels are probably the number one reason that otherwise good shooting rifles turn bad. Depending on your gun, that could happen every ten shots or every hundred shots.
What can I substitute for gun cleaning solvent?
From your bathroom, you need a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. That’s it. Two simple, everyday household products that when mixed together in a 50/50 solution will eat away metal deposits in your gun, clean burned particles of metal and gunpowder that stain your gun’s innards, and make the outside portions shine like new.
What is the best thing to clean guns with?
Yes, you can use an old toothbrush from your bathroom. However, a brush designed for use on guns, such as this one, can reach all the nooks and crannies, making it perfect for cleaning out slide grooves and trigger parts. A utility brush designed for gun cleaning will be durable enough to get the job done properly.
What is a good quality gun cleaning kit?
Good gun cleaning kits come with a variety of extra components worth your money. A box of clean cotton patches and various non-bore brushes are must-have features. Other add-ons, such as a magazine well-cleaning brush and cotton swabs are also worth snapping up, especially for semi-autos like Glocks or AR-style rifles.
What should be in a good gun cleaning kit?
A good gun cleaning kit should have aluminum, brass, or coated steel cleaning rod or pull-cable, caliber-specific bore brushes and jags for pushing patches, a handle brush, and cleaning patches. If it includes solvent and oil, that’s even better.
Can you make your own gun cleaning kit?
The best gun cleaning kit is usually one you assemble yourself. Of course, you can use a universal gun cleaning kit as a base and build off it, but don’t be afraid to changes the components, container, or a combo of anything else to your preferences.

120 Posts. #10 · Dec 31, 2012. I agree with rbertalotto, I have a 452 in 17HMR, except I clean around 30-50 rounds, maybe less and I let the gun tell me when to clean, after all these are jacketed bullets. Oh and by the way, I always use a “Proper 17HMR Bore Guide” and if you all are not using one of these you should be.
.17 HMR – How often and what is the best way to clean the barrel
Get in a groundhog field and shoot several rounds and at some point you will see the accuracy disappear. Keep after the bore with a good solvent and brush before, say 50 rounds and you should be ok. Each rifle is a story to it’s own self and it will tell you how long it will tolerate your load or ammunition.
Cleaning a 17HMR Barrel – Ruger Forum
One piece stainless, carbon or coated is the ticket. The Patchworm, bore snakes and that other stuff might be ok for a quickie at the range. But to CLEAN a barrel, you need a brush. So a rod or the Otis system is the best way to do that, although I have always preferred a good rod with a bore guide, even over the Otis.

Dec 22, 2020How often should I clean a .17 HMR barrel if I want top accuracy? It’s amazing how complex shooting is. A year ago, I had no idea different calibers responded differently to cleaning. Nov 2, 2021I then brush out the bore with a .17 nylon brush dipped in 5-30W synthetic motor oil. About 20 strokes. I finish with about 5 patches. Squirting foam into a .17 bore is not easy – it seems to go everywhere instead of inside bore. Jamming the end of the foam can tube against the .17 muzzle gets some foam into barrel.
17HMR barrel cleaning – NZ Hunting and Shooting
Alot of people think just because the 17 HMR is a rimmed case you dont need to clean it. This is true for alot of rimmed cases as they have a wax coating that protects the bore from rust, as the 17 HMR has a jacketed bullet just like most larger cals it need some cleaning after used if you want years of trouble free use.

I also usually shoot 200- 250 rounds a day through my 17 HMR. I don’t bother with any in-between cleaning during the day, I just clean it when I am done for the day. Ideas for Cleaning a Small Barreled 17HMR – The Firearms Forum
Looking on the web for ideas to clean the tiny little barrel of the 17HMR. Not a lot of clear good options. Bore snakes retain grit making them like sand paper over time. Weed whacker trim line seems like it would be good but no comments about what goes on the end of it to hold a jag. Wonder…
17hmr cleaning regime ???? Less or more – NZ Hunting and Shooting
Only if the accuracy drops off a bit do I clean it and even then the first thing I think may have moved is the scope ( it was once ). Clean with a one piece rod as the bore is very fine, there’s plenty of rifles that have lost accuracy due to over cleaning and damaging the bore or crown.

It is a synthetic solvent which gives a considerable measure of protection against the buildup of copper and carbon in the barrel. You pretreat the well-cleaned barrel with this product and then clean the barrel after each use with the same product. Makes cleaning easy and reduces the number of passes that the cleaning rod makes through the bore.

Cleaning Rod Bore Guide for 17 HMR Rifles « Daily Bulletin
Once the guide rod and bushing are in place, you can use a 17-caliber cleaning rod* with patches and/or brushes to clean the barrel. Use the rod normally, but make sure your patches are quite small and don’t apply too much pressure as these small-diameter rods can kink if you try to force over-size patches down the bore.
I Won’t Be Cleaning The 17Hmr Barrel Again – The Hunting Life
If you clean, which I advocate, CLEAN IT THOROUGHLY, don’t do the job half heartedly. Many people suggest they have cleaned the barrel, but simply make a gesture at it, then suggest it takes (in some cases) 50 shots to get it shooting straight. A clean true barrel will shoot straight first, or at worst second shot, after a PROPER clean!

Barrel life and opinions on 17hmr???? – The Optics Talk Forums
Barrel life is very long with the .17 HMR, as is the case with all rimfire chamberings. Though it’s faster than other rimfire rounds, it’s still pretty low pressure and fairly slow compared to a lot of centerfire cartridges. .17 HMR does require a bit more frequent cleaning than other rimfires because it fires copper jacketed bullets that will leave fouling in the bore, but it doesn’t require …
