How Long Does Eco Complete Substrate Last

Some pet parents elect to change their substrates every 6 months, however this substrate helps cultivate healthy nutrients and bacteria.

The Eco-Complete substrates are high-quality freshwater substrates made by CaribSea. There are two different product lines: Eco-Complete Cichlid and Eco-Complete Planted. As you can imagine, the former is specifically designed for cichlid tanks and the latter is formulated for planted aquariums.

Usually, it’s in the range of 1-3 months though. One of the things we like most about the Eco-Complete substrates in this regard is the fact that they are actually pre-cycled. CaribSea fills the packaging with plenty of purifying bacteria to jump start the cycling process.

To stop that from happening, CaribSea recommends that you place 1-2 inches of substrate on top of the filter plate, then add a cut up plastic window screen barrier on top of that. To finish it off, add an additional 1 inch layer of substrate on top of the screen and you’re good to go. Overall, we are really impressed with Eco-Complete Cichlid.
