Did The Feudal System Exist

In short, feudalism as described above never existed in Medieval Europe. For decades, even centuries, feudalism has characterized our view of medieval society.

Feudal system, also known as the feudalism, is a historiographical term used to describe the combination of the legal, economic, military, and cultural customs that flourished in Medieval Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries.

Virtually none of it is accurate. Feudalism was not the “dominant” form of political organization in medieval Europe. There was no “hierarchical system” of lords and vassals engaged in a structured agreement to provide military defense. There was no “subinfeudation” leading up to the king.

In these ways, while elements of feudalism continued in many parts of western Europe right up to the 18th and 19th centuries, the feudal system as a whole, with its hierarchy of fiefs and lords and vassals, had died out by the end of the 16th century.
