Did Seti Home Find Anything

“For 20 years, there’s been this fight between keeping the project running and getting the results out to the scientific community,” says Eric Korpela, the director of SETI@home. “At this point, we can’t even be sure that we haven’t found anything because we’ve been doing most of our data analysis on small test databases rather than the whole sky.”

One has to remember that the search for Seti, although a very sexy project for getting the populace involved in volunteering their spare CPU cycles for science, is at very best a long shot when it comes to detecting any signal from ET. It was and still is at it’s most basic level an experiment in distributed computing.

The SETI@Home project never did find any evidence of alien life, but it still leaves behind an important legacy as one of the first and most successful examples of distributed computing. Initially, the project intended to try to reach up to 100,000 home computer users, but it was far more widely used than was originally imagined.
