Did Persia Attack Greece

Greco-Persian Wars, also called Persian Wars, (492–449 bce), series of wars fought by Greek states and Persia over a period of almost half a century. The fighting was most intense during two invasions that Persia launched against mainland Greece between 490 and 479.

The first Persian invasion of Greece had its immediate roots in the Ionian Revolt, the earliest phase of the Greco-Persian Wars. However, it was also the result of the longer-term interaction between the Greeks and Persians.

However, while en route to attack Athens, the Persian force was decisively defeated by the Athenians at the Battle of Marathon, ending Persian efforts for the time being. Darius then began to plan to completely conquer Greece but died in 486 BC and responsibility for the conquest passed to his son Xerxes.

When Persia invaded the Greek mainland in 490BC and again in 480BC, many Greek states submitted and even assisted the Persians (e.g. Thebes). Rome was similarly assisted by its Greek allies during its campaigns against Greek states.
