There is a story that Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity one day when he was sitting under a tree. An apple fell from the tree and hit Newton on the head. He realized gravity was the force that kept us on the ground. He also discovered it kept the moon close to the earth.
Nobody credible claims Newton discovered gravity. The whole point is that people had noticed that things fall down (gravity) and wanted to know how that worked. What he discovered was a general rule that showed gravity, things falling down, accounted for lots of phenomenon. He discovered the theory of universal gravitation.

So, did Isaac Newton really discover gravity? – Newslaundry
In time, though, it was found that observations, like distortions in Mercury’s orbit, were not accurately predicted by Newton’s gravitational law. When this happens, scientists generally either modify the theory to fit the anomalous observation or reject it completely and devise a new theory. In early 20th century, Einstein took the latter path.
How Did Newton Discover Gravity? – Reference.com
Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity around 1665 while he was drinking tea and observed an apple falling from a tree. Newton deduced that the force that caused the apple to fall to the ground also is the same force that causes the moon to orbit the earth. When he was growing up, Newton spent much of his time on his family farm reading.

Who really discovered the law of gravity? – BBC Science Focus Magazine
Ever since, Newton has been credited with discovering the law, describing how “All celestial bodies whatsoever have an attraction or gravitating power towards their own centres”. But these words are not Newton’s. They were penned by his scientific rival Robert Hooke in 1670, decades before Newton started telling people the apple story.

His first computation did not give the good agreement with observation, because he used an incorrect value for the Earth radius. When later he inserted more accurate value, there was an agreement.
